The Jewish Women’s Benevolent Society is a very special organisation of volunteer women which has survived for close to 125 strong years. From inception to the present day, we have extended a hand of support and friendship to the needy in our Jewish community, helping them to live with dignity and hope.

The Jewish Women’s Benevolent Society is a very special organisation of volunteer women which has survived for close to 125 strong years. From inception to the present day, we have extended a hand of support and friendship to the needy in our Jewish community, helping them to live with dignity and hope.
We are proud to be able to contribute financially to Jewish welfare in Johannesburg and also to education needs.

Our long-standing track record shows that we don’t only implement financial assistance. Sometimes the care and support that are synonymous with the Benevolent are just as important, if not more so.

The social services that we provide are manifold:

• Our Clothing Depot provides the people whom we support with new or nearly new clothing and household items. Scholars are given new school uniforms by us.

• Our Befrienders Club visit lonely and isolated men and women, with telephone contact in between. Befrienders are well-skilled at listening and hearing using patience and compassion.

• Our 55 Club is a social club run twice weekly where members enjoy a hot 3-course meal followed by entertainment and interaction with people. Transport is provided where needed.

• We oversee the Sandringham Gardens Library as well as offer a mobile library service to the Sandringham Gardens hospital patients. The Benevolent is run by lady volunteers who conceptualise fundraising ideas and put them to fruition so that the huge funds that are necessary to keep the Benevolent alive can be raised.

The rewards of belonging to the Benevolent are huge – it feels good to go to sleep at night with the knowledge that you have contributed to the lives of the less fortunate in the community in a meaningful way.
