JWBS volunteers provide a helping hand and compassionate friendship to lonely, sick or housebound people, often providing the only social interaction these people have in a week.
Spending an hour once a week having a chat, sharing a meal, enjoying a cup of coffee, reading a book, or simply listening has been found to make a positive difference in the lives of so many who say they feel happier and less lonely because they have a regular visitor.
While regular visits can make a real difference to an older or lonely person’s health and happiness, our volunteers tell us that they too really enjoy and benefit from their role, knowing they are making a difference.
If you would like become a JWBS befriender and make a meaningful difference, please volunteer by calling our office on 011 485 5232 and putting your name down or you can also fill in the volunteer form and we will be in touch.
Each year generous donors donate thousands of books to the JWBS Book Store. Volunteers are responsible for sorting these books into different genres before they are sold to the public or at our various book fairs. Wonderful books can be bought at the book fairs at exceptionally reasonable prices with proceeds from the sale of books being disbursed directly to beneficiaries of the JWBS.
If you have books to donate, they can be dropped off at the JWBS Office in Sandringham or they can be collected from you. Call 011 485 5232 to arrange

The Jewish Women’s Benevolent Society has the privilege of running the Clothing Depot at Sandringham Gardens, supplying Jewish men, women and children of the community who are in need of these necessities.
The JWBS Clothing Depot assists clients by providing gently worn used clothing, accessories, linen and other items for the home. Clients’ needs are assessed by social workers and they are assisted at the depot by our dedicated, warm and friendly volunteers who are there to serve them and meet their needs, making every endeavour to make sure they always leave with their pride and dignity intact.
The depot depends solely on donations of gently worn clothing, shoes and NEW underwear, which can be collected by our driver at any time or delivered to our offices.
The JWBS Gift Shop is run by a group of creative volunteers who produce beautiful gifts for Pesach and Rosh Hashanah. Gifts are available a month before Yomtov and can be viewed at our offices or online. Orders are made up accordingly and can be collected from our offices or delivered by the JWBS to family and friends in Johannesburg.
